THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE DVD PACKAGING
Client: Universal Pictures

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is considered as one of the classic budget slasher flicks of its generation and paved the way for the successful Halloween and Evil Dead shock-franchises. Total Film magazine voted the movie as the greatest horror film of all time.

Brief
In the aftermath of the morally charged debate of the ‘video nasty’, Universal Pictures recognised the critical acclaim captured by the film and briefed a Special Edition Uncut release of the DVD featuring a host of special features and deleted scenes. Universal wanted to draft the release following the public desire for the slasher genre drafting on the successful DVD re- release of The Evil Dead - Book of the Dead [packed in a rubber book jacket outer].

Solution
Tobe Hooper’s budget 1974 slasher flick did not have many useable assets to hand. From the small amount of archive assets available, many pieces assets were scratched, damaged or unsuitable. Our creative  solution was to create a new suite of assets [in conjunction with clever use of archive assets], graphics and atmosphere from scratch using 3D renders of a blood spattered chainsaw, cleaving hook and hammer. Images were re-purposed and crafted with suggestive copywriting to create a contemporary, up-to-date take on a modern movie classic. The client was suitably impressed with the creative pitch to allocate more budget. What initially began as a budget catalogue Special Packaging project grew  into  a  Collector's DVD  digi-pack, full-colour brochure and alternative  slipcases. A full above the line campaign was commissioned with national consumer press and outdoor advertising added to the marketing mix.

Services Used
